2019: May Favourites & Highlights

May has been full of unexpected surprises, happiness & laughter. May has been one of those months where everything has been pretty well rounded & I'm hoping that's exactly how June turns out to be as well. I've got some exciting stuff coming up in June so I cannot wait to share those parts of my life with you next month.

  • I celebrated my 21st birthday at the beginning of May. I was so incredibly spoilt so thank you to everyone who sent me birthday wishes, cards & gifts! It was so incredible to spend that time with those I love & love me the most!
  • For those of you that don't know, I'm studying at the moment & doing my Certificate in Educational Support. Being in the classroom for the past three months has been so eye opening but most of all, it's been so incredibly rewarding. Working with children has always been passion of mine & to be able to make a difference, small or big, come with a great sense of achievement. I'm excited for my next step in my career with children.
  • Being on the sideline of my cousin's rugby games is one of my main highlights every winter. The atmosphere is amazing & it's great to see support for such a great bunch of boys playing a game they have such passion for.

How To Beat A Midday Slump

Sleeping on the job might be frowned upon but the truth is, short afternoon naps have been proven to enhance performance & creativity in the workplace. A midday power nap would be a great way to beat the afternoon slump but what if your workplace doesn’t have those snooze-friendly policies?

Avoid Sugar
If you depend on sugar for a quick energy-boost, then you know that those effects are often short lived. Stick to water & start away from sugary drinks. I always try to keep some dark chocolate handy, that way when I get some of those weird midday cravings I can make a smarter choice.

Snack Smarter
Make your own snacks & bring them in from home. That way you know exactly what you put in your body. All you need to do is make a bath on the weekend & you’ll be all set for the work week ahead. You can make your own granola bars, banana loaf or even almonds & fresh berries. It really doesn’t get easier than that. Having something health on hand means you’ll be less likely to make an unhealthy decision & it’ll also help keep your engird levels up.

Step Away From Your Desk
More often than not you can find me working behind a computer. When I’m not at my desk, behind my computer I’m normally taking a break,  walking around stretching which helps me stay more focused when I get back to my desk.

Stay Hydrated
Dehydration can cause poor concentration, tiredness & fatigue, so drink up buttercup. I like to to drink a big class of water when I first get up in the morning & I keep a water bottle on me at all times. If you’re not into drinking water, you can try mixing it up by adding fruits, herb-infused ice cubes or even cucumber. Another thing that can be helpful is to take a break in the afternoons & treat yourself too a good ole cup of tea & take some time to slow down.

What's Holding You Back In Life . . .

Every once in awhile I find myself falling into this same pattern of assigning myself blame & that’s when I usually have to remind myself that change doesn’t happen on its own. A goal without a plan to take action ends up just being a wish that never comes true. Again, I have to remind myself that no one is coming to save me. So what’s hold you back in life? How do you learn to let go? Well, sometimes you just have to take a nice, long look within & more often than not the thing that stands in your way, is you. I’m currently reading ‘You Are A Badass’ by Jen Sincero & to say the least, it’s sparked a few things inside of me. Full review coming soon.

Resentment
Resentment is one of those stubborn emotions that’s quite difficult to just ‘turn off’. It can also act as a major roadblock to your learning & allowing yourself to just let go. You use it as the perfect excuse to put yourself through those never ending negative loops. And so, it ends up holding you back, simply because you just refuse to let go. We resent other people for the things they do or don’t do. When we resent ourselves, most of the time it’s for the exact same reasons. We don’t always love others the way they are & we don’t always love ourselves the way we are. Say, your significant other commits a small act of injustice, forgets an anniversary, goes out for drinks without inviting you & you begin to resent them for days. But of course there’s more. Because your such a generous person, you are kind enough to throw some of that resentment your way. You need to work on an important project & keep putting it off until last minute & then you resent yourself for procrastinating. Maybe, at times, you fall into a pattern of beating yourself up over a mistake you made or a shitty situation you found yourself in. Shortly thereafter, blame & resentment start to find their way in. Strong resentment takes some time to move on from & usually there needs to be a lot of forgiveness & letting-go involved which let’s be honest, is never easy, simple or quick to do. You can easily overcome those small resentments though by working on being less harsh & critical. You could try practicing mindfulness & kindness, not only towards others but also yourself. What I’m really trying to say, is that you should try to give yourself more love & not waste too much time on re-living those moments & situations that bring out resentment. Those small ‘acts of injustice’ that others sometime commit are usually just a small part of the people we love. Those small ‘mistakes’ you sometimes resent yourself for are also just a small part of who you are.

Fear
Fear & its constant presence in life is one of the biggest things holding you back. You fear failure, rejection, you fear that you might not be good enough or strong enough. This fear can stop you from trying new things. It can stop you from going after your dreams. Sometimes it can also stop you from opening up to new relationships because you’re afraid of abandonment or rejection. Occasionally. we equally fear things that at first seem good & positive, like success. Why? Because with success often comes responsibilities, have to take risks & let’s not forget that success takes lots of work. So how do we stop fear from holding us back? You feel it & you do those things that scare you anyway. Once you understand how fear works & why it can sometimes feel so paralysing, you will realise that a lot, if not most, of your fear are simply baseless. It also helps to remember that fear is just a standard part of life & it’s somethings all of us feel. Without exceptions.

Other People & Your Relationships
We’re not talking about other people holding us back directly. Yes, there are toxic relationships & toxic environments that often hold us back. We also have very close relationships with people, like family & friends, who discourage us at times. Sometimes thought, it’s us putting too much value onto other peoples opinions that eventually end up holding us back. Some of us tend zoo immerse ourselves in other people’s lives so deeply, that we forget to live out our own. At times, we can also be guilty of being too concerned with what everyone else is doing, to work on our ourselves & own own goals. Another way I feel as if people can hold us back is when they’re not even part of our lives. Let me explain. Those who have yet to find love, for example, often believe that being in a relationship is something that will complete them. They might even think to themselves, “There is something missing in my life & only another person can make that feeling go away. That is my key to happiness.” If you’ve felt like this or feeling like this currently, you’re not alone, I’ve been there but that’s when you start attracting experiences into your life that will match exactly how you’re feeling inside. Instead of hyper-focusing on other people, their lives, opinions or finding love, devote more time to focusing on yourself. Ask yourself, what can I do for me? What do I want out of my life? How can I go? What are some things that I’ve always wanted to try? What’s stopping me from trying them now? How can I practice self-love & improve the relationship I have with myself? Don’t be afraid to explore your own feelings, emotions & fears. Find things that will bring you peace & joy, things that will help you grown, things that will challenge you & help you get to know yourself a little better. Having strong friendships & having a love in your life is important but ultimately, the relationship you have with yourself will always be one of the most important. There will be times were other people will try to discount your strengths, criticise your ideas or make you doubt yourself, Only you can stop them from holding you back.

Doubt
It doesn’t matter if you’re a confident person & it doesn’t matter how much you’ve already accomplished. You probably have doubts about yourself. Even if we don’t always think about them, even if they’re not always overwhelming, those doubts are there. Some of us don’t even realise that it’s doubt that’s holding us back. Some doubt sneaks up on you when you least expect it. Other times, it’s right in your face, trying to convince you that you’re not good enough, strong enough or ghat you don’t have what it takes to over come your struggles. Question is, are we going to allow it to stop us? One way to stop doubt from holding you back is to simply take action. To start now, to do, to learn, to try & get better at it. Doubt will always be there. You can believe the lies it tells you or you can work on building your confidence & stop these doubts from holding you back.

There comes a time in life when you realise that the only person standing in your way is you. Most of the things that are holding us back in like are things we do, things we believe or like to believe are true. The experiences we go through in life build up some of those insecurities & limits, often make them all stronger. Fear, doubt, resentment - we give them too much power. We waste our time waiting for something to change, something to finally ‘click’, for someone to save us, we put too much faith into thinking that things will just ‘happen’ or ‘work out’ one day. Truth is, no one is coming to save you - you’ll have to do that on your own.

Product Review: Soph X Revolution Original Eyeshadow Palette

Before this eyeshadow palette I had never tried any Revolution products before. After purchasing this palette, I went back for more. Soph has done the most beautiful job with this palette. It has shades for everybody & for every occasion. If you have the opportunity to swatch some of these shades yourself, definitely give them ago.

“A perfect mix of 14 matte & 10 shimmer eyeshadows to create everything from a natural daytime look all the way up tp full glam. The 24 versatile shades gives you everything you need to create your look no matter what time of the year, whether you’re looking for light shimmers, warm browns, rich golds, rusty oranges, dark smokey shades or even a pop of colour, this palette is for you.”

A few of my favourite shades are Cuppa Tea, Tiramisu, Pug, Rosewood, Iced Coffee, Festive Flame, Pumpkin, Smokey Bronze & Copper Coin.

I mention this is all my product review & while eyeshadow is slightly different it's important to remember all products work different for everybody & I always encourage that you do your own research before purchasing anything I've recommended. What works for me, doesn't always work for everyone else.

What To Do If... | Three Organisation Methods To Try Today

All you know how much I love a good ole organisation post so I'm back at it with some ideas on how to help you keep on top of your game more often.

What To Do If You Feel Like You Don’t Have Time
Schedule it in! If there’s a spot that you feel organising, there’s only one way to actually do it & that’s to find the time to do it. Not having time is the common denominator excuse that’s pulled out by all of us on a weekly basis to shed responsibilities for tasks, hobbies & chores but we somehow find time to do all these other requirements that we manage to fill our diaries with. So schedule it in! I know it can be easier said than done but giving a task priority & making it seem like an important to-do note in our diary pages gives us a much higher chance of actually completing it at some point.

What To Do If You Don’t Know Where To Begin
The shit drawer. Organisation can be a daunting task so where the hell is a good place to start? What’s one place every single one of us needs to declutter, that won’t take 265 hours to complete? Well, I’m going to take a good guess & say it’s the shit draw. You know that drawer that you have to tease with much tugging back & forth because something’s got wedged in there & then when it eventually jolts open sellotape, paracetamol, takeaway menus, photos & old birthday cards, all fly out? Yeah, that. Sorting it is simple. You have to get everything out; paperclips, drawing pins, hair clips & half used candles, it all. Either bin it or keep it. Get some organisation system going in that drawer that will keep from getting messy again, or at least a little less messy.

What To Do If You’re Struggling To Even Get Started
The one touch rule. The idea is that you don’t begin a decluttering task until you actually have time to complete it entirely. The idea is simple. Once you’ve touched ‘on’ to a task - say opening up your mail in the morning - you completely finish it before you begin something else. So whether you have to RSVP to an invite or file away some paperwork, you actually do it then & there without saving it for later, aka I’ll do it in three months time. This rule is perfect for digital decluttering. Deleting photos, having a social media purge, organising your inbox or even replying to emails in the first place. Give it ago & let me know how you get on.

I’ll be frank, I can carry some absolute crap around with me in my handbag. I’m constantly having to clean it out & it’s the biggest pain in the butt. However I am always the one that people come to if they need a tissue, lip balm or a hair tie so maybe it’s not such a bad thing after all?

If I’m just running around doing errands or seeing family/friends then I’ll use my wee cross body bag however,  if I’m the the classroom, at work or studying & need to carry my diary, paperwork & my laptop with me, I’ll reach for my tote bag.

21 Lessons In 21 Years

I’ve just had my 21st birthday & that sparked a huge reflection over this past week. It feels just like yesterday I was turning 18 & now I’m 21, where has the past 3 years gone?! I’ve learnt so much over these past 21 years & I wanted to share some of those lessons with you today.

1: Try to avoid negativity & the dangerous cycle of comparison.
2: Don’t apologise for things that make you truely happy.
3: Appreciate & love what your body does for you even if it’s not working perfectly.
4: Connect with people, online & offline.
5: Hangout with friends & family. Always be creating great memories.
6: Allow situations to be what they are.
7: Fuss over animals, always.
8: Don’t be ashamed to hangout with yourself.
9: Make the most of your fear & manipulate it into the motivation you need rather than it being the fear that stops you.
10: Be kind & considerate, always.
11: Let those that love you unconditionally help you when you need it.
12: Never let anyone make you feel inferior.
13: Take chances & opportunities when they arise because they won’t always be there.
14: Always do your best, that’s all anyone can ever ask of you.
15: You can always try again.
16: Get outside & walk. Explore your surroundings. Breathe. Take everything in.
17: Live in the moment. Be present. Worry about now, not what could happen or has happened.
18: Embrace the time you have, don’t wish it away.
19: Always make times for those that matter the most to you.
20: Be proud & continue to be proud of yourself, what you’ve achieved & continue to achieve.
21: Self care is important. You must look after yourself first.
